I grabbed the key and shoved it in my pocket.
"This kind of thing happen often?" I asked the lawyer.
He grinned. "Only with my clients. We're a very...old...firm. We deal with some very eccentric clients."
"Eccentric?" I chuckled. "That's your word for it?"
Something about the lawyer put me off. I didn't trust him...and that made me doubt whether or not this key was going to unlock anything good.
"Heed the tag," the lawyer added. "If your uncle added instructions, you can be assured they're important."
I nodded, but I was only half listening by that point. Uncle Ted wasn't famous. He was never in Forbes magazine. But he was damned rich -- everyone in the family knew that much about him.
What we didn't know was how he'd gotten rich. And now, we also didn't know how he died. The lawyer didn't have any answers, and I didn't feel like pressing him for details anyway.
Too busy thinking about that key. The tag only said when not to use it...not where to use it.
But I knew.
I'd only ever spoken to Uncle Ted once. Fifteen years ago. And that's when he had told me...
